Science and technology will always be at the forefront of the future and Detroit is steadily gaining recognition as a prime location for the tech world to manifest. This week, officials from Consumers Energy will welcome professionals and students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math to Detroit, as the sponsors the annual Women of Color STEM Conference.

The national conference is celebrating its 22nd anniversary this week at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. The conference offers a platform for women in STEM fields to network, share ideas and inspire the next generation.
The Future is Bright with Consumers Energy
Consumers Energy promotes STEM education to construct the stateโs future workforce. Its Generation Genius Project promotes robotics to inspire future engineers, scientists, and workers in technology-related fields.
Creating an Inclusive Workplace
Consumers Energy is also creating an inclusive workplace that features Employee Resource Groups. These include its Womenโs Advisory Panel, Womenโs Engineering Network, Minority Advisory Panel, Hispanic Outreach Team, Veterans Advisory Panel, and more.
Supporting the Next Generation
Several leaders will participate in the conference. Consumers Energy and the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program are sponsoring students to attend.
The Need for More Women in STEM
Angela Thompkins, Consumers Energyโs human resources manager of diversity and inclusion, highlighted that while more girls are taking advanced STEM courses in high school, their numbers start to dwindle upon entering college. The group most underrepresented is minority women.
โWith the demand for STEM talent high and supply low, we are committed to recruiting and retaining diverse STEM talent to ensure we have the knowledge and experience necessary to meet the dynamic needs of our customers now and in the future,โ Thompkins concluded.
