Atlanta Owners Evicted Before Studio Opening

Imagine spending your hard-earned money to invest in a mixed-use property and doing a bunch of renovations, and preparing for a grand opening just to come in to find everything you put into the building on the street before the grand opening.

In this unfortunate situation, it would suffice to say it would’ve been more beneficial for these women to buy a mix-used property, especially since they put $30,000 in renovation fees into it. Sounds like a rental scam and if it is a rental scam, they may have lost all their money, but that is yet to be determined.

Business owners in Atlanta are facing legal action after being evicted from a multi-use space they had leased and renovated for their hair salon, dance studio, music artist development, and photography studio. Monica McKelvy and her daughter, Rey Sunshine, had paid thousands in leasing fees and a $6,000 deposit to secure their spot.

However, just weeks before their grand opening, they were wrongfully evicted and called squatters by deputies who removed all of their belongings and dumped them on the street. The property management company, Urban Suburban, served them with a petition for ejection, leading the business owners to take legal action. The origins of this dispute remain unclear.

The mother and daughter Monica McKelvey and Rey Sunshine were shocked to receive a petition for ejection from their leased property, claiming they were unauthorized occupants. However, this conflicts with their lease agreement and other documents.

The ejection even went as far as to call them intruders and squatters, which was hurtful and offensive to Sunshine.

Their attorney is preparing to file a lawsuit against Urban Suburban, stating they had no legal right to force the tenants out without proper notice of termination. The attorney also claims that damages should be paid for their actions. This leasing scam is a clear violation of Georgia law, and the tenants are fighting back. source
