Renowned trombonist and jazz vocalist Aubrey Logan is set to enrich Loyola’s 56th Annual Jazz Festival with her performances and insightful workshops. Scheduled for March 7, Logan will also lead interactive sessions on March 6 and 7, offering attendees a unique opportunity to engage with her musical expertise and industry knowledge.
Logan’s workshops, which are free and open to the public, will feature her playing the trombone and addressing questions from participants. Drawing from her own experiences, Logan recalls attending similar festivals in her youth, understanding the curiosity and concerns students may have. She emphasizes that her role as an artist educator differs from that of traditional band teachers, as she aims to provide answers to broader industry-related questions that students may not typically encounter in their daily music education.
In her workshops, Logan plans to share practical insights on navigating the music industry, a journey she describes as challenging yet essential for creative artists. She has developed a structured approach to learning and performing music, which she believes can be effectively communicated within the hour-long sessions. Logan encourages students to come prepared with questions, noting that prior research often leads to more meaningful discussions.
Logan’s impressive career includes accolades such as the Audience Choice Award and Jury’s First Place Award at the prestigious Shure-Montreux Jazz Festival in 2009. She is also recognized for her work with the music collective Postmodern Jukebox, where she gained attention for her rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood.” Her upcoming performance at Loyola will feature collaborations with the award-winning Loyola Jazz Ensemble and the Crescent City Collective, showcasing a blend of talent and creativity.
Gordon Towell, coordinator of Jazz Studies at Loyola, expressed enthusiasm about Logan’s participation, highlighting her ability to connect with students and her role in promoting female representation in jazz. Logan herself advocates for women in the industry to embrace their voices unapologetically, encouraging them to express their opinions confidently. As the festival approaches, attendees can look forward to an engaging experience filled with music and learning.
