Back on June 26, 2014, WQHT HOT 97, New York’s premier Radio Station for Hip-Hop and R&B, hosted the iconic Who’s Next Live at the prestigious SOB’s venue. The event featured a line-up of emerging talents including Tina, Mapei, Kreesha Turner, and Too Many Zooz, and was a platform for new artists to display their music to industry insiders and trendsetters. Now, over a decade later, let’s journey back and revisit this unforgettable night of music and culture.
Who’s Next – A Stage for Budding Talents
Hosted by HOT 97’s own Rosenberg and Shani Kulture, and with music by DJ Juanyto, the Who’s Next Live was the premier platform for new artists to show off their music for industry insiders and music trendsetters.
Spotlight on Tina
Coming all the way from Los Angeles, California, the Who’s Next stage welcomed former model, Tina. Before embarking on her solo career, Tina was a member of the pop girl band The Stunners. releasing two independent mix tapes, In Case We Die and Reverie, Tina signed to RCA Records in 2012, where she was currently working on her debut , featuring the lead single, “2 On.”
Mapei and Her Indie Style
Joining Tina was Downtown Records’ very own Mapei, who’s credited for having a very indie and electronic music style. Visuals for Mapei’s hit single, “Don’t Wait,” were released that time along with a remix featuring Chance the Rapper.
Kreesha Turner’s Versatile Vocals
Canadian recording -on-bet” target=”_blank”>, producer, songwriter and dancer Kreesha Turner showed off her versatile R&B, jazz, and dancehall vocals.
Too Many Zooz’s Unique Sounds
Lastly, Harlem natives Too Many Zooz took over the Who’s Next stage. Noted by the New York Post as the best thing in the up-and-coming New York City music scene, Too Many Zooz uses live instruments including saxophones, trumpets and electronics in their performances.
