The BBC World Service has initiated a 30-minute daily emergency radio program, broadcast via medium wave and shortwave frequencies, to deliver news and information to audiences in Iran amidst ongoing unrest and significant internet restrictions. This initiative, as reported by the Association for International Broadcasting, aims to provide access to independent journalism during a critical time when many within the country face limited connectivity.
This temporary service supplements the existing offerings of BBC News Persian, which includes television and digital platforms. The program is designed to ensure that audiences in Iran can access reliable information and analysis when traditional digital channels may be compromised.
Funding for the emergency radio service is allocated from the existing resources of the BBC World Service, and it is intended to operate for a limited duration. The initiative underscores the BBC’s commitment to providing impartial and accurate news coverage during crises, particularly in regions facing significant challenges to free speech and media access.
