Legislative Momentum for AM Radio

Broadcasters are intensifying their efforts to advance the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, a critical piece of legislation aimed at ensuring AM radio remains a standard feature in passenger vehicles. This initiative is particularly significant for radio programmers, labels, and artists who rely on AM radio as a platform for reaching audiences. With the 2024 election year approaching, the urgency to pass this bill has escalated, as stakeholders fear it may get overshadowed by other political distractions.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) is under pressure to bring the bill to a vote, which has garnered substantial bipartisan support. The legislation has 318 co-sponsors in the House and backing from 61 Senators, reflecting a broad consensus on the importance of AM radio. The bill mandates that AM radio be included in vehicles for eight years and requires warning labels on vehicles that do not comply.

High-Profile Endorsements and Industry Support

Recent endorsements from influential figures, including President Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), have bolstered the campaign’s visibility. During a recent appearance on the Salem Radio Network, Trump expressed strong support for the bill, emphasizing its significance to Republican audiences. Johnson, who has a background in broadcasting, also acknowledged the importance of AM radio in his previous roles.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has been at the forefront of this initiative, with President/CEO Curtis LeGeyt stating that the time for Congress to act is now. The NAB’s coalition includes organizations such as AARP and the National Emergency Management Association, highlighting the bill’s relevance beyond the radio industry.

Continued Engagement with Automakers

While legislative action is the primary focus, the NAB remains open to discussions with automakers regarding the inclusion of AM radio in new vehicles. The campaign gained traction earlier this year when Ford reversed its decision to remove AM radio from its electric vehicles. However, no other major automaker has publicly indicated a similar change in policy.

LeGeyt noted that while it is unclear if additional manufacturers will reconsider their stance, the NAB is committed to ongoing dialogue with the automotive industry. The push for the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act represents a critical intersection of media, technology, and public safety, underscoring the enduring relevance of AM radio in today’s rapidly evolving landscape.
