One such foundational moment took place three years ago when Motown Records, a name synonymous with iconic music, ventured into the expanding Gospel music field. This bold move was realized through a joint partnership with EMI Gospel, birthing the new label, Motown Gospel. This article delves into the inception of Motown Gospel, highlighting key players, monumental performances, and the promising future it held.

Birth of Motown Gospel

Motown Records and EMI joint ventureThe birth of Motown Gospel resulted from a joint venture partnership between Motown Records and EMI Gospel. The partnership was by Barry Weiss, Chairman &; CEO, UMG East Coast Label Group and Bill Hearn, President &; CEO, Capitol Christian Music Group. Weiss revealed that the merger was an ideal opportunity presented by UMG’s acquisition of EMI music. The newly formed Motown Gospel label aimed at offering broader Urban AC crossover potential and further opportunities and synergy between Motown Gospel artists and the Motown and Island Def Jam Black roster.

Motown Gospel Launch

Motown Gospel launched with a vibrant press reception and artist showcase at the Arc Theatre in Los Angeles. The event featured performances by Gospel best sellers Smokie Norful, Tasha Cobbs, Tye Tribbett, and Kierra Sheard. Other artists on the Motown Gospel roster include Stellar Award winners VaShawn Mitchell, Pastor Charles Jenkins and Fellowship Chicago and Grammy nominee Anita Wilson.

Leadership and New Hires

The structure of Motown Gospel includes Ken Pennell and the executive leadership of EMI Gospel, based in Nashville, along with new hires, especially in the A&;R areas. The first appointment was VP of A&;R, songwriter, and producer extraordinaire Aaron Lindsey. Lindsey, a respected talent in gospel music, boasts four Grammy awards and multiple Stellar and Dove awards. His songwriting credits and production work include esteemed artists like Israel Houghton, Byron Cage, and Marvin Sapp.

New Signings and Future Plans

Platinum seller and multi-Grammy winning CeCe Winans her intention to be the first new signing to the Motown Gospel label. Her first all-new recording in more than eight years was slated for an early 2014 release. The event also showcased Motown Gospel’s strong release schedule for 2013, with performances from Tasha Cobbs, Tye Tribbett, and Kierra Sheard, and new music from Grammy-winning Smokie Norful.
