Reflecting On Lanterns On The Lake’s “Every Atom”

As we continue to navigate through the transformative times of the mid 2020s, let’s take a moment to look at the music that has echoed our sentiments, fears, and hopes. One such significant piece of work is the studio ‘Spook The Herd’ by Lanterns On The Lake, released in February 2020. The band’s music, and particularly their track “Every Atom”, encapsulates the existential crises, polarized politics, social media debates, addiction struggles, grief, and climate crisis that marked the beginning of the decade. Now, five years on, we reflect on the relevance and resonance of this music in our current landscape.

Reflection

On ‘Spook the Herd’, Lanterns on the Lake broke new ground with songs that were direct and crucial. Vocalist Hazel Wilde proved herself a songwriter able to find the personal contours to contemporary issues, fully inhabiting them to make them real. Their natural touchstones of gauzy dream-pop and monumental post rock still floated in the air, but listening to Lanterns on the Lake felt like sitting in the corner of the room as they played.

The Making of ‘Spook the Herd’

Approaching their fourth , “There was a sense of release in terms of what kind of music we felt we could make. The idea of what kind of band you’re supposed to be really disappeared. It was great; you felt you could do whatever you like,” said guitarist and producer Paul Gregory. This resulted in a leaner Lanterns on the Lake – at times unusually stark. Their sound was beautifully winnowed into something more pared , urgent and direct, in keeping with Wilde’s messages, on an loaded with songs marked by an arresting intimacy.
