Welcome to a throwback of an inspiring event that took place over a decade ago, in 2013! As we look , we’ll revisit the unforgettable day when the students of Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory School, located on Chicago’s far south side at 250 East 111th Street, were greeted with an extraordinary rally organized by local Black radio station – Power 92 FM (WPWX- 92.3). Not just any event, this was a day of recognition and celebration for the young minds who had committed themselves to positive change within their community and beyond. Let’s journey back to this remarkable event that was more than just a pep rally – it was a celebration of youth power, resilience, and the spirit of service.
Power 92 FM and Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory School: A Day to Remember
On May 20, 2013, Power 92 FM brought special guest T.I., Atlantic Records recording and star of VH1’s hit television show T.I. &” target=”_blank”>;Tiny: The Family Hustle, to the school. From 10am-12noon Power 92 DJ’s The Hot Boys Tone Kapone and Shagg Nice, as well as other special invited celebrity guests and local dignitaries, celebrated the outstanding achievements of students at Gwendolyn Brooks Prep.
Commitment to Service
These students had spent the previous year committing themselves to outstanding acts of service done to uplift and evoke positive change within its Roseland residence, Chicago, and the world. Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory School, led by principal D’Andre Weaver, had been recognized as a Gold Medal School, ranked #13 in the State of Illinois according to US News and World Report. A student body that is 99% minority, over 60% of the students were enrolled in Advanced Placement Courses.
Artistic Representation of Violence
Students in its Arts and Culture departments were collecting 506 pair of shoes to create a sculpture that represents the 506 lives lost to violence in Chicago the previous year. All students and faculty at Brooks College Prep participated in a day of service on June 7, 2013 in honor of the late author Gwendolyn Brooks.
Impact beyond School
The school was also the recent recipient of a grant dedicated to growing, cultivating, and giving away food to Chicago’s Roseland community as well as food pantries the City of Chicago. Over 50 of its students and teachers teamed up with Team World vision as the only high school in the country who would run the Chicago Marathon to raise money for clean drinking water for the people in Africa.
Power 92 FM’s Community Outreach
Power 92 FM is one of four radio stations owned by The Crawford Broadcasting Company that serves the Chicagoland area. The radio network is responsible for the community outreach program “Power 2 Change”, designed to touch areas of health disparities, education, family cultivation, and the positive uplifting of listeners in the areas in which the radio stations serve.
