Charity Galas and Memorable Performances
On May 6, 2012, Chaka Khan, having recently shed 60 pounds, joined David Foster and Friends at the Kennedy Center Spring Gala in Washington, D.C. to raise money for arts education. Among Foster’s other “friends” were singers Jewel and Peter Cincotti, trumpeter Chris Botti, violinist Caroline Campbell, soprano Angel Blue, and a multicultural group of new and developing . Chaka performed “Through the Fire,” “I’m Every Woman,” and the newly penned “The Promise That We Make,” which she performed for the finale with all performers and 40 wives of military servicemen.
Chaka’s Healing Journey
The day before the gala, Chaka electrified a sold-out crowd at the historic Howard Theatre. She enthralled her loyal and devoted with her signature classic hits, including “I Feel For You,” “Tell Me Something Good,” “Sweet Thing,” “Everlasting Love,” “Ain’t Nobody,” and more. The Washington Post’s rave review headline read, “Chaka takes the crowd through the fire.” Chaka shared her testimony about her days of alcohol and drug abuse and how the urgent pleas from her daughter and mother led her to recovery.
International Jazz Day Performance
Chaka also made a memorable appearance at the inaugural International Jazz Day at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York . She shared the stage with some of the greatest jazz legends in music history and performed Ella Fitzgerald’s classic, “Them There Eyes.”
Tackling Health Challenges
Having conquered alcohol and drug use for eight years, Chaka also faced a struggle with her weight, as well as diagnoses of diabetes and high blood pressure. Committed to a healthier lifestyle, she lost over 60 pounds and managed to free herself of both high blood pressure and diabetes.
