Welcome to the Future of Streaming!

Let’s cast our minds to 2022 when CBS launched their full-episode streaming app for iPad and iPhone users. Today, in 2025, that app’s success has far exceeded expectations, with even more shows, features, and user engagement than ever before. Now, not only can you stream CBS programming from primetime, daytime, and late night, but the app has opened up another monetization window for CBS’s industry-leading content, and it’s changed the way we consume TV content. This blog post will take you to the beginning of this journey, highlighting the key features and the impact this app has had on CBS’s audience and revenue.

Streaming on the Go

CBS joined the premium stations that allow users to stream their favorite shows digitally, providing more flexibility and opportunity for catch-up viewing.

The CBS App

The CBS App, originally launched for iPhone and iPad users, offered full-episode streaming of CBS programming and second-screen features for popular shows. The app was made for immediate download from the App Store and similar full-episode streaming apps for all major mobile and tablet platforms, including Android and Windows 8, were introduced later in the year.

Deeper Engagement

As CBS Interactive President Jim Lanzone stated, online viewers want deeper engagement with the programs they love. The new CBS App satisfied that need, allowing people to watch CBS shows on the screen for them and offering a host of extra features for a richer viewing experience.

Integrated Experience

By the start of the Fall TV season, the CBS App integrated the existing CBS Connect App experience, offering integrated social feeds, live events for direct fan engagement, and second-screen experiences synched to the broadcast with additional content for select shows.

Partnership with Buick

Buick was the official launch partner for the new CBS App, bringing users CBS programming with reduced commercial interruption for the first several weeks launch. This partnership helped extend the CBS.com experience to viewers, with the website leading all other broadcast networks in terms of unique viewers for 51 consecutive months up until February 2013.

Fast forward to 2025, the CBS app continues to dominate the streaming landscape, offering viewers a more personalized, engaging, and immersive TV experience.
