Looking Back at Sammy Miller and The Congregation’s Debut Leaving Egypt
Back in February 2020, Sammy Miller and The Congregation made waves in the music industry with their debut , Leaving Egypt. They also introduced us to the first single “Shine,” a charming number featuring Sammy’s warm vocals, uplifting lyrics, playful piano hooks, and an imaginative arrangement complete with dynamic horn and backup vocal-driven crescendos.

Sammy Miller, a Grammy-nominated drummer known for his work with Joey Alexander, founded The Congregation in 2014 at The Juilliard School in New York City. This was a group of creative misfits who were not only individual masters of their instruments but also sought a form of expression beyond solo performances. Their live shows were a unique blend of comedy, rock, and a newly interpreted form of jazz which quickly created a buzz among music lovers.
The band, comprising of seven creatively vivacious musicians, recorded their 9-song debut , Leaving Egypt, in just four 16-hour days at the legendary United Studios. The album beautifully captured the band’s vulnerability, communal nature, warm wit, and playfully virtuosic musicality.
