As we stand on the threshold of a new year, it’s time to look and celebrate the trailblazers and rising stars who have made indelible marks in the world of music. Essence, the leading brand championing African- women, continues to honor these extraordinary talents through its now long-established annual event, “Black Women in Music”. This event, a part of the official GRAMMY® Week, continues to shine a spotlight on the achievements of both new and seasoned artists. In the recent iteration of this event, Essence paid homage to four-time GRAMMY winner Erykah Badu on the 28th anniversary of her groundbreaking debut , “Baduizm”. The event also saw spectacular performances from renowned artists like -winning Nigerian singer-songwriter Tiwa Savage, among others.
Essence’s Celebration of Black Women in Music
Essence’s “Black Women in Music” is an invitation-only soiree that salutes the year’s exceptional GRAMMY nominees. In its recent edition, the event fêted Erykah Badu on the 28th anniversary of her revolutionary debut , “Baduizm.”
A Special Tribute to Erykah Badu
The evening honored the phenomenal Erykah Badu, who has been enthralling us with her unique neo-soul music since her debut with “Baduizm”. Essence Editor-in-Chief Vanessa De Luca said, “It is only fitting that we honor the accomplishments of our neo-soul queen, whose remarkable artistry still moves us 28 years later. We congratulate Erykah on her incredible career, as well as all of this year’s GRAMMY nominees, who share their amazing gifts with the world.”

The event also featured a performance by Roc Nation management Tiwa Savage, an award-winning Nigerian singer-songwriter making a significant impact in the U.S.
