As we peek into the archives to reflect on significant initiatives that have shaped the financial landscape over the years, we can’t help but reminisce about a groundbreaking partnership that truly made a difference. In a timely and relevant response to the financial literacy crisis that affected many African communities and beyond, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and Chevrolet came together in 2015 to foster knowledge and understanding around financial literacy. They hosted a series of workshops aimed at educating consumers and helping them develop concrete steps towards financial security. Now, a decade later, as we navigate the financial complexities of 2025, we can’t help but appreciate the lasting impact of these workshops and the significant strides made in promoting financial literacy.

Workshops Details and Locations

The workshops, Rainbow PUSH Money Matters sponsored by Chevrolet, were held in Detroit, Atlanta and Chicago. The focus was to simplify the complexities of college financing, credit, and the benefits of long-term money management. The first session took place in Detroit on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015 at Wayne State University, in conjunction with the annual PUSH Automotive Summit.

Goals and Expectations

“For over forty years, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition has been committed to leveling the social and economic playing field in this country and around the world,” said the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. “The next phase of this movement involved a comprehensive, national empowerment campaign aimed at helping to improve the quality of financial health. This exciting partnership with Chevrolet helped us get there.”

Workshop Curriculum

The interactive curriculum for the Money Matters series, taught by some of the nation’s leading public and private sector financial experts, was designed to help a cross-section of participants at various levels of financial literacy. Participants could expect to depart from the sessions equipped with tools and resources to develop best practices that would support stronger financial health.

Chevrolet’s Involvement

“Chevrolet has a long-standing relationship with the African American community,” said Paul Edwards, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. “We work hard every day to build strong relationships through our community programs. The Money Matters series was an excellent example of Chevrolet deepening those relationships in a meaningful way.”
