The BET Honors 2009
The BET Honors were kicked off with a host of inaugural festivities in Washington, D.C. The event commenced on Saturday, January 17 and culminated with BET’s first-ever Inaugural Ball on Tuesday, January 20.
The event was hosted by the esteemed actress Gabrielle Union and celebrated the achievements of several iconic figures in various fields. The honorees included legendary songstress Mary J. Blige, groundbreaking filmmaker Tyler Perry, celebrated dancer and choreographer Judith Jamison, businessman and philanthropist Earvin “Magic” Johnson, entrepreneur B. Smith, and Congressman James E. Clyburn. The event took place at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., and was aired during Black History Month.
The Inaugural Ball and its Impact
The inaugural ball held by BET Networks was a landmark event, not just for its celebration of talent but also for its focus on the future generation. The proceeds from the ball were directed towards America’s Promise Alliance, the nation’s largest non-profit alliance dedicated to the well- of children and youth, founded by Colin and Alma Powell.
The ball also supported two institutions committed to the education and advancement of youth in Washington, D.C. – Dunbar High School and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

The first edition of the BET Honors had a star-studded list of honorees including Alicia Keys, Tyra Banks, Dr. Cornel West, Richard Parsons, the Honorable Maxine Waters, and Janice Bryant Howroyd. The event was marked by unforgettable performances by Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, Wyclef Jean, Gladys Knight, Brian McKnight, and others.
Stephen Hill, President of Programming, BET Networks, and Lynne Harris Taylor, Vice President of Specials, BET Networks, were the show’s producers, along with John Cossette of John Cossette Productions.
