Singer Corinne Bailey Rae will appear tomorrow on PBS’ “Tavis Smiley” to perform two songs from her latest album ”The Sea” and discuss how her life has changed since her husband’s sudden death two years ago. In 2008, Rae’s husband, Jason Rae, was found dead; his death was attributed to an accidental drug overdose. “The Sea” marks Rae’s re-entry to the musical world. Corinne Bailey Rae is a British singer-songwriter who rose to fame in 2006 with the release of her debut album, “Corinne Bailey Rae.” That album earned her two MOBO Awards and three Grammy Award nominations in 2007, including a nomination for Best New Artist. However, Rae’s musical career came to a quick halt when her husband, Jason Rae, was found dead from an accidental drug overdose. Since then, Rae has been on hiatus from her music career. Her latest album, “The Sea,” is the first album Rae has produced since her husband’s death. “The Sea” is available in stores now.
Prior to her work as a solo artist, Rae was part of the all-female indie band, Helen, modeled after the bands Veruca Salt and L7. Helen became the first indie band signed by a heavy metal label, Roadrunner Records. That partnership was short lived; Helen disbanded after the bassist became pregnant and left the band. Rae attended the University of Leeds , and graduated with a degree in literature in 2000.
