BROADCAST PIONEER JOHNNY MORRIS CELEBRATES 45 YEARS IN THE BUSINESS
LOS ANGELES, CA – On Monday, January 25th 2010 – Music industry pioneers, celebrities and friends will gather at The Conga Room – 800 W. Olympic Blvd. – Downtown Los Angeles at 7p.m. to celebrate radio pioneer Johnny Morris for his 45 years in broadcasting.
The event, dubbed “On the Air with Johnny Morris: 45 Years In The Game,” will honor Mr. Morris for his 45 stellar years in broadcasting. The evening will include tributes and live performances by soul great Charles Wright and the Bay Area’s own Tony! Toni! Tone! and the extraordinary sounds of Lenny Williams. More special guests to be announced.
Morris gained an interest in the broadcasting field at just 9 years old and soon built his own pirate radio station in the garage of his grandmother’s Fresno, California home. He got his first professional gig when he was 16 years old and has continued to build his broadcasting career with integrity, knowledge and passion.
In the 60’s, Morris was known to millions of listeners as Ronnie Dark, on popular soul music station KSOL in the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area. He later became known as Johnny Morris and has worked as an on-air jock, program director and station engineer for popular radio stations KDIA-Oakland, KGFJ, KACE, KUTE, KTYM, KRBV and kjlh in Los Angeles. Morris has mentored and worked with such broadcasting greats as Sly Stone, Frankie Crocker, Alonzo Miller, Lee Bailey, Jerry Boulding, Alvin John Waples, Dr. Perry Johnson, Tavis Smiley, and Stevie Wonder to name a few.
Johnny Morris was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and proceeds from the event will benefit “The Johnny Morris Health Fund”.
