Rihanna has big plans for her fifth annual Diamond Ball, with plans to honor two deserving individuals while raising money for charity.
The Diamond Ball is a fundraiser for Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation which supports and funds groundbreaking education and emergency response programs around the world. At this year’s ball, set for September 12, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and civil rights activist Shaun King will receive this year’s Diamond Ball Award.
The event will be hosted by Seth Meyers and will feature performances from Pharrell and DJ Khaled.
“I can’t imagine a better night than this year’s Clara Lionel Foundation event with Seth Meyers, Pharrell and DJ Khaled,” said Rihanna in a statement. “I am particularly honored to present Prime Minister Mottley and Shaun King with this year’s Diamond Ball Awards for their groundbreaking work. We are so thankful to them for joining us and making the night better than ever.”
Prime Minister Mottley has made her mark in politics as the first woman elected to lead the Barbados Labour Party. She went on to become the first female Attorney General and Deputy Prime Minister of Barbados. Mottley has been active in leading lifechanging programs in the country, including the Education Sector Enhancement Program, which opens the door for young people to use their creativity and leadership skills to rehabilitate their school facilities and technology.
Meanwhile, King is known for sharing civil rights issues on social media, sparking discussion and movements for change. He also was a part of relaunching the Frederick Douglass publication, The North Star, as well as co-founding social justice lobbyist organization Real Justice PAC to elect prosecutors of all levels who support criminal justice reform.
In addition to the planned performances, the Diamond Ball will host a live auction. Items that will be up for bid include the Jonas Brothers VIP experience, Paper Planes Outfits for a year, a signed Danny Green NBA finals jersey, event coordination services with SO events, a workout with Rihanna’s trainer, and a Savage X Fenty 2020 Fashion Show Experience.
