Best Radio Stations 2018. The MOST Votes FROM the Industry
Congrats to our winners for this year’s RF Focus Best Radio Stations for 2018. These votes were from your industry peers (programmers and jocks) out of their respect for other stations, jocks, and programmers. These votes are not based on ratings but the execution, jocks, hustle, and presentation. This is one of our most popular features and the first one we have done since 2012. Once again congrats to the winners.
WWPR/NY “Power 105”
This was no surprise at all considering The Breakfast Club and Charlamagne are red hot right now. No doubt Angie Martinez also plays a part but the overall sound of the station is indeed solid. KUDOS to PD Thea Mitchem (click NEXT below to see next station)
The return of the historic morning show “Frank and Wanda” was a brilliant move by station management. Frank is an icon in the market as well as Greg Street. Reggie Rouse gets a lot of KUDOS for programming the station.
KRRL/Los Angeles “Real 92.3”
Doc Wynter came into the market a few years ago and fit right in and that’s not easy to do in La La Land. He has consistently been giving Power 106 a much-needed competitor and taking the morning show host Big Boy with him. The station sounds great and Doc is another great PD who is greatly respected.
Hurricane Dave has been dubbed “The new Elroy Smith” by several people and without question, he too is a marketing genius. There is no programmer in the country who is more dedicated to his craft and station promotion that Dave. His social media presence is second to none and he just added a podcast to what seems like a nonstop effort for Radio One.
WGCI/Chicago “107.5 WGCI”
Another great station makes the list we constantly heard about how much the programmers love the morning show The Morning Takeover and consistent credit was given to Derrick Brown, Director of Programming for iHearMedia Chicago. The station is heavily involved in the community.
WPEG/Charlotte, NC “Power 98”
No Limit Larry and the Morning Madhouse is still going strong in the market and the station sounds amazing. Jeff “Uzi D” Anderson is consistent, creative and a great programmer. He is also a consistent social media poster who translates a feel-good vibe for the market and the station.
WHQT/Miami “Hot 105”
Lots of respect for the station and industry vet Rick Party. Party does the afternoon drive show with Benji Brown and many jocks admire his side hustles and voiceover gigs. PD Phil Michaels-Trueba gets a lot of respect from programmers.
W233BF/Atlanta “Streetz 94.5
Steve Hegwood is one of the most respected PDs in the industry. Several programmers even called him brilliant for taking a small station and capitalizing off of underplayed hip-hop in the market with a plethora of competitors (more than any other market for urban in the country). The station sounds HUGE and one of the only urban stations that still promotes itself by sending out consistent press on what the station is doing. (just thought I would throw that in because it’s true)
Lorenzo “Ice T” Thomas is probably one of the hardest working pros in the industry after leaving his last commercial radio gig, he could have easily sat back and waited for another gig watching his money run out but instead he took the bull by the horns and made lemonade from lemons by creating an AMAZING internet station. I was a bit surprised at how many industry people mentioned the station but then again, I am a big fan of the show too.
There are several honorable mentions like WBLS, The Box, and WJLB but we ran out fo space. We will do another list in 19. Winners may use this as a reference and promote on your social media outlets as well as in all press materials all that we ask is that you post our website address. Congrats again.
