A speeding driver flipped her car and killed a woman walking across the street. After the accident, Houston police said, the driver fled the scene.

Around 1:20 a.m. Monday, on Clearwood Drive near the Gulf Freeway, the incident occurred. An officer heard the crash when it happened. Upon arrival, the officer found a flipped-over Dodge Charger on its roof. According to witnesses, the car was speeding down the street when the driver lost control.

The car then hit a light pole and flipped. A woman crossing the street at the time was struck by the rolling vehicle and died. The driver of the car fled from the scene. Police are not sure if she was drunk.

“I do know that she was coming from a club, so that’s always a possibility,” Sgt. David Rose said. “It doesn’t sound like that was the true cause of the crash. Speed was the cause of the crash in this particular case. Alcohol and drugs may have played a factor.”

Three other passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash, police said. They stayed with the car and did not flee the scene. They are helping the police with the investigation.

The passengers were unharmed. According to the trio, they had met the woman at a nightclub the night before and did not know her identity.

The victim’s identity has yet to be determined by investigators.
