Over the past several weeks The Tom Joyner Morning Show has seen quite a bit of controversy. We know many fans of the show want to know what they can expect in the near future and we’re hear to tell you how the industry works and what’s next. Here are some of the things you may or may not know about the show. Let me add, if you went on the last Fantastic Voyage cruise then you know that Tom, Sybil and J are HILARIOUS (when off the air) if it wasn’t for advertisers and being on in mornings on commercial radio the show would be even better. Would Tom consider doing SiriusXM radio show? Time will tell but it’s certainly the path that several other former commercial radio jocks have chosen to get away from all the stipulations and corporate politics. In an upcoming exclusive interview with Radio Facts , Tom Joyner informed us that he has every intention of continuing to do radio.
Tom Joyner has over 8 Million Listeners
That in itself means he has a stronghold on a HUGE African American audience many who whom are very loyal to him and have been listening to the TJMS for 21 years. Please click “Next” above or below to see next segment.
The Story about Tom being Booted from this Show in the Daily Mail is a Political Industry Plant
“Blame it on Obama! Radio legend and first African-American nationally syndicated host Tom Joyner getting the boot timed to President’s exit from White House”
Anyone reading that story who works in the music and radio industry can tell by the language and lingo that story was intentionally planted. It was however, very well written. By who? Who knows, it’s really hard to say, Tom’s camp would not have benefited because it’s saying that they want to boot him out because of his age and Radio One would not have benefitted because of the backlash from fans… but SOMEONE planted that story who was FROM the industry.
Out of all the Syndicated Shows Tom Holds the Top Spot for….
With all due respect to the comedians who are on the radio… Tom is the ONLY one who is respected as a true DJ and radio vet. He’s considered an industry legend above all others. He didn’t do radio because he was tired of doing comedy he has ALWAYS done radio and is the only with the true history.
Tom Risked his career to help African Americans During the CompUSA Controversy
There are very few black syndicated hosts who have stood up to help the black community in times of need. (OK, Michael Baisden deserves credit for that too) but if you notice most will skirt by important issues to the community and stay out of it. Tom has always been in it and his show’s continuance was threatened during a campaign to oust the now defunct CompUSA for not supporting the black community. The company was one of many who benefited from sales of product but refused to advertise on African American outlets. The campaign deeply hurt the organization and they were forced to send executives to respond on the Tom Joyner show with initiatives to fix the issue, unfortunately, they folded.
OK, Tom has not had a lot of Good Look with Commentators, Granted
The TJMS show has gone through a lot of entertainment reporters, sidekicks and commentators many of which left us here are Radio Facts scratching our heads when they started but in all fairness it’s pretty typical for changes to take place on a show like his.
J Anthony Brown is (or may not be) Still Obligated to the Show
It’s contract renewal time for several of the shows’ talent at Reach Media. While the contracts are not up for a couple to a few months, the rumor is that J quit because his pay was cut by 50% in a new contract proposal. If that’s true, you certainly can’t blame him for walking as that would appear to be an invitation with someone opening the door and damn near pushing u out you to leave. We are told they are going to try to work something out but we can’t guarantee that J will be on the show anymore. If it’s contract renewal time that would mean he’s approaching the end of his previous contract.
The Show DOES Need an Infusion of Youth
I will admit with or without J Anthony Brown the show does need a younger perspective, someone in their 40s or 50s would greatly help (lol, I kill me) OK someone in their 30s perhaps to bridge an obvious gap. Having that perspective and energy can’t do anything but make the show more interesting.
There are Several Changes on the Horizon for Radio One
Radio One Owns Reach Media, Tom USED to own Reach Media with his business partner David Kantor but they sold 80% to Radio One which means they got a lot of return on their investment but they lost a lot of control over the decision-making process for the show. Tom’s show may actually BENEFIT from a newer comedian with a fresh perspective but J Anthony Brown appears to be a staple a this point. Tom’s contract ends at the end of 2017. Will he walk? From our perspective, he has no intention to.
