10 Celebrity Headphone Trends: Dre, Jay Z, Ludacris and more

Dr Dre – Beats

width=Dre started the craze with iconic record exec Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine. He just sold half of his shares walking away with over $300 Million in the process then coming back and introducing an extension of the brand. THEN just this very week at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) Iovine and Dre made the decision to split from the parent company Monster (formerly Monster Cable) a severely overpriced product line (via other products) because the owner Chief executive Noel Lee has not been seen anywhere wearing or supporting the Beats brand, one mind you, that increased his company’s earnings by a whopping 60%. Monster is now trying to come up with their own versions of similar product (good luck). Without question, Beats headphones are everywhere touting a price tag from $150 to over $300.00. Many celebrities wear them which is pretty much all you need to make the brand a smash hit and they are. No word on where Dre and Iovine will take the line next but Beats technology is already in a line of new HP computers. Look for more to news on this company to come.

Ludacris – Soul

width=I am not hearing much about these headphones and the parent company Signeo does not seem to be doing a lot to allegedly promote the brand. I called them last year to get a pair to review and they were not ready yet and I never heard from the marketing company again. I’m not seeing any kind of grass roots campaign for this brand and that’s not good. Ludacris appears to be a savvy businessman so I hope that he’s on top of this. Marketing teams MUST be familiar with or have resources to your base. Their website leaves lot to be desired as well. Prices on these headphones range from $65 to $300.00 or more.

50 Cent Street by 50 and Sync by 50

width=These headphones are not cheap and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson states the technology is much better than most other headphones which is why. Being the brilliant marketing entrepreneur that he is, he is the only one (of note) giving part of the proceeds of the headphones back to help provide meals for the hungry. The headphones range from $299 to $399 so if you buy one pair that should be enough to feed the homeless. SMS Audio is the parent company and there is no word on sales stats to date. Curtis was at the CES this week promoting the brand.

Jay Z Roc Nation Aviator by Skullcandy

width=Since his wife Beyonce`gave birth this past week, it’s no wonder that Jay Z was not at CES but then again when you are a star of his magnitude you can promote products just by letting them use your name which is what Skullcandy appears to be doing. The Aviator model is the result of an effort by the Rapper to design a line of headphones inspired by the classic Aviator sunglasses. They come in colors like Black, White and Gold Brown. They are reasonably priced at $150.00 and get fairly good reviews.

Quincy Jones Signature Line by AKG

width=I have to admit, when I first heard that Quincy had a line I thought he could not be serious but out of all the celebrity headphones these have the sleekest design. Harmon is also an established brand. No word on whether Jones was at CES but he did have this to say about his headphones”Music is so much more than notes on a sheet of paper. When it’s created with passion, with soul, we get something that is greater than ourselves””and it can move us deeply. Throughout my entire career, I have trusted only AKG to deliver the highest standard of sound””the same standard I hold myself to when I make my music.” Sounds like a commercial and a convincing one. The price averages $399.00

Snoop Dogg – Signature Skullcrusher by Skullcandy

Ncredible Nick Cannon (Monster)

width=Don’t laugh yet. Out of everyone on this list Nick Cannon is probably the one that subBlack parents are most familiar and comfortable with. Nick is a very savvy marketing man and what other person off of this list would have had the opportunity to wear their headphones at the 2011 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards? The line has both on-ear and in-ear versions. The product is youth-targeted. The NTunes will include Monster’s signature tangle-free cable and a right-angle connector.

Beats by Oscar de le Renta

width=These are absolutely the most hideous headphones I have ever seen. Are they supposed to be “Headmuffs?” They look more like MattedMuff.   Dr Dre surprisingly loaned the brand Beats to Oscar de la Renta and one may assume de la Renta is using them for some sort of high fashion disaster and if that is his goal, he has achieved it. Can you imagine seeing someone walk down the street with these?   Who cares what the hell these sound like because who would wear them?

Skullcandy NBA Series Headphones

width=Actually a great marketing idea but I can’t help but to wonder what they are paying for licensing fees. The profit margin is probably not that great but who knows. It’s a great idea. No sales stats but the average price is $60.00

Gratitude Inspired by Earth Wind and Fire


width=In an effort to make up for the huge hit the company is about to take with the departure of Beats by Dre, Noel Lee is in a hurry to get as many celebrities on board as possible to keep the headphone craze going or to at least milk it while he can. Without question, since Dre was first and has the biggest product line, he will survive the trend not so sure about Monster (they have dropped the “Cable” part from their name). EW&F member Verdine White was at CES pushing the brand inspired by the group. Just looks like a pair of headphones to me, what’s the Gratitude reference? Are they free? No.
